Daily technologies - Greek Colonies
Textile production was one of the priority tasks for the Greek city women. All textiles that the family members needed throughout life, as well as those used in the houses, were made by the women of the family. The basic raw material was wool, which in many cases must have come from the sheep that were raised on the family farm.
The production process begun with the treatment of sheared wool, after being washed and carded, was spun by women, and this long and tedious activity could be reconciled with other domestic activities. Finally, the wool was woven on looms, whose location in specific areas of the house has been documented in the archaeological excavations, thanks to the discovery of loom weights. Another subject closely linked to the textile production was the weight that was part of the spindle. In Empúries such weights and loom weights have been found in domestic areas and in some tombs, as part of funerary offerings also with bronze needles that were used to sew.
